1. 2 Assignment Brief
In this task, we are required to further analyze and develop ideas based on our selected design work from Task 1. The main objective is to conduct a visual analysis by articulating our observations and critical understanding of the design in approximately 300 - 400 words, referring to the Visual Analysis lecture notes and step-by-step guide provided.
We also need to re-upload the selected design image together with its full credit line, ensuring proper citation of all references used. Based on the understanding of design principles observed in the chosen work, we are then required to sketch three new design ideas inspired by the original design and provide a short rationale (about 30–50 words) to explain each idea.

Title of Design : Up the River / Kayak
Designer Name : Christi Wilbert
Year : 2016
Size : Width: 13 inches , Height: 19 inches
Medium : Digital Print (PDF / PNG)
4.1 Observation
This selected design, Up the River / Kayak (2016) by Christi Wilbert, is a digital print measuring 13 × 19 inches. The composition shows a red kayak positioned vertically at the center of the image. A kayaker holding a paddle is seen from a top-down perspective. The background is filled with dense, flowing white curved lines over a textured deep blue surface. These lines form swirling patterns on both sides of the kayak, resembling moving water currents. The color palette is limited mainly to blue, white, and red. The overall composition appears symmetrical, with the kayak acting as the central visual anchor surrounded by rhythmic line patterns that suggest movement.
4.2 Analysis
This design have shows a strong sense of emphasis through color contrast and placement. The bright red kayak stands out sharply against the cool blue background, immediately attracting the viewer’s attention and establishing a clear focal point. Contrast is further enhanced by the difference between the solid, flat shape of the kayak and the thin, dynamic white lines representing water.
Movement is a dominant design principle in this composition, created by the repeated curved lines that guide the viewer’s eye in swirling directions across the image. These lines generate a sense of visual flow and energy, suggesting strong water currents surrounding the kayak. Despite the active background, symmetrical balance is maintained through the mirrored swirling patterns on both sides of the kayak. The repetition of line elements also creates unity, while the limited colour palette helps maintain harmony throughout the overall design.
4.3 Interpretation
The artwork can be interpreted as a visual metaphor for navigating challenges. The turbulent swirling lines may represent obstacles or uncertainties, while the centrally placed kayak Represent focus, determination, and direction. Although surrounded by dynamic movement, the kayak remains steady, conveying resilience and calmness amidst chaos. The balanced composition and harmonious color palette create a meditative yet powerful atmosphere, suggesting that stability and control can still exist within motion and unpredictability.

Sketch 1 - Swimming Under Water
- Rational
- This design places a fish as the focal point against a dark coral background to create strong contrast. Flowing curved lines suggest water movement, while repeated coral shapes create rhythm. Careful element placement maintains balance, and the limited color palette enhances harmony and unity within the composition.
Figure 5.2 Sketch 1 with Design Principle Label
Sketch 2 - Dancing Rhythm With Sun
- Rational
- This design uses flowing white lines to create a sense of movement, with the human figure and the sun as focal points. Curved lines represent the spreading heat of the sun, while contrasting colors and balanced composition help both elements stand out clearly.
Sketch 3 - Drifting Petals
- Rational :
- This design draws inspiration from the reference artwork, featuring flowers floating on water to create contrast, while fish suggest movement. Ripple patterns introduce repetition, and careful placement maintains balance. Harmony and unity are achieved through a limited blue, white, and yellow color palette.
Sketch 4 - Flow of the Deep (Final Selected Design)
- Rational:
- This design uses the shapes of fingers and fingerprints to represent the sea, with fish integrated into the fingerprint patterns . One fish is shown in a different color to create contrast. Repeated fingerprint lines create rhythm, while the finger shapes provide balance, showing that the ocean is in our fingertips.
Week 05 (03/03/26)
In this week i have started to sketch my work and get feedback from lecture :
- Sketch 1
- The coral should be made smaller because it is currently too large. Reducing its size will create more contrast and improve the overall composition. The coral can function more as a background element rather than the main focus. Also reuse the white line elements from the inspiration (the flowing white lines on top) to bring back that visual effect to make it relate to the selected artwork . Lastly it is important to ensure that the overall design remains balanced.
- Sketch 2
- This sketch works well and can be one of the final choices. Compared to Sketch 1, this composition appears more balanced. I can choose between Sketch 1 and Sketch 2 as the final design.
- Sketch 3
- This sketch needs further improvement in terms of balance. Adjustments should be made to create a more stable and harmonious composition. For now, this will be considered the last option.
In this week, I showed Sketch 4 to the lecturer and asked for feedback.
- Sketch 4
- This sketch works better compared to Sketch 1, Sketch 2, and Sketch 3. The design now shows clearer patterns and flow, which improves the overall movement and visual direction. The composition appears more stable, and the elements relate better to each other. However, the design still requires some refinement to improve the details and overall balance.
Through this assignment on sketching ideas, I gained a deeper understanding of design principles and how they can be applied in my own work. By identifying and incorporating these principles into my sketches, I was able to better understand how they function within a composition and how they influence the overall visual outcome.
This process also helped me strengthen my ability to translate theoretical knowledge into practical design work. By experimenting with different ideas and compositions, I learned how to create designs that are more balanced, meaningful, and visually effective. Overall, this assignment encouraged me to think more critically about my design decisions and further develop my creative and analytical skills.
