Assignment Brief

Assignment Outcome

In this assignment, I have chosen Habitat 67 as my installation location and aim to create a storyline that connects Habitat 67 with Expo 67 to showcase the community and cultural impact of both. This proposal includes the location, cultural analysis, spatial considerations, and the technology involved with the storyline and storyboard.

Assignment Reflection

Developing a proposal for a projection mapping installation was an exciting and challenging experience. I chose Habitat 67 as my focus, drawn by its iconic design and historical significance in Expo 67. This choice felt natural because the building’s architecture and history provided a rich canvas for storytelling. While selecting the building was straightforward, deciding on the theme required careful consideration. After exploring three possible themes, I ultimately settled on Expo 67. It offered the strongest connection between the building and the broader cultural narrative I wanted to showcase, which the other themes lacked.

The project required significant independent research to ensure the proposal was both meaningful and impactful. Delving into the architectural significance of Habitat 67 and its cultural relevance during Expo 67 was time intensive. Understanding these aspects was crucial to crafting a narrative that resonated with the space and its history. This research phase, while challenging, helped me appreciate the importance of grounding a projection mapping installation in a meaningful story that aligns with the location and audience.

Although this was an individual project, collaboration and feedback played a key role in shaping my proposal. I shared my ideas with classmates during informal discussions and sought input on the clarity and relevance of my narrative. These interactions provided fresh perspectives and helped me refine my ideas. For example, one classmate suggested focusing more on the personal experiences of residents and visitors during Expo 67, which added an emotional layer to my proposal. Communicating my vision effectively during these exchanges also taught me the value of articulating ideas clearly and listening actively to feedback.

A key challenge was synthesizing the vast amount of historical and cultural information into a cohesive narrative. At times, I felt overwhelmed by the depth of the material and uncertain about what to prioritize. To overcome this, I broke the research into smaller tasks and focused on connecting the story to the architectural and cultural significance of Habitat 67. This approach made the process more manageable and allowed me to create a focused narrative that complemented the visuals I envisioned.

This project was also a journey of self-discovery and growth. I learned that effective storytelling requires not just creativity but also careful attention to context and audience engagement. I also realized how much I enjoy blending history and design to create meaningful experiences. Moving forward, I plan to apply these insights by prioritizing the integration of narrative and visuals in future media installations.

Overall, the projection mapping proposal taught me the importance of grounding creative projects in meaningful stories, balancing research with creative expression, and seeking feedback to improve my work. While the process was demanding, it was also deeply rewarding. This experience has strengthened my skills in research, storytelling, and critical thinking, and I am excited to bring these lessons into future academic projects.
